Dhaka:State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir stated that Bangladesh's approach to the future of the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty with India will be guided by the nation's best interests.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Kobir emphasized that the government would act in accordance with Bangladesh's national interest and security concerning the renewal or replacement of the treaty. He made these comments after the closing session of the Bay of Bengal Conversation at Hotel Sonargaon.
As the current treaty nears its expiration in December, questions have arisen about its future. Kobir noted that discussions continue at the official level between Bangladesh and India and mentioned that any top-level dialogue would require a visit and a conducive environment created through these official engagements.
The state minister also addressed speculation regarding a potential visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to New Delhi in November, asserting that any confirmation about such visits should originate from Bangladesh.
