Bangladesh Navy Takes Over NIOHC Chairmanship

Bangkok: The 24th meeting of the North Indian Ocean Hydrographic Commission (NIOHC) was held in Bangkok, Thailand, from February 11 to 13. A two-member delegation of the Bangladesh Navy, led by Assistant Chief of the Navy (Operations) and Chairman of the National Hydrographic Committee, Rear Admiral Mohammad Musa, participated in the meeting, said a release of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) today.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting saw the participation of member countries including Egypt, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, and the United Kingdom, along with six associate member countries, three observer countries, and various international organizations. The discussions focused on improving hydrographic activities, increasing regional cooperation, the role of hydrography in expanding the blue economy, future work plans, and the importance of hydrography in ensuring safe navigation.



Additionally, the participants deliberated on the role of hydrography in achieving maritime security, sustainable management of marine resources, and Sustainable Development Goal-14 (Life in Water). On the closing day of the meeting, the Bangladesh Navy was unanimously elected to take over the NIOHC Chairmanship from the Thai Navy for the period of 2025-2027.



The election of the Bangladesh Navy as the Chairman of the NIOHC signifies an important milestone and reflects the Navy’s commitment to enhancing regional cooperation and hydrographic capabilities for safe and efficient shipping. As the new Chair, the Bangladesh Navy will play a crucial role in formulating regional hydrographic policies and promoting sustainable maritime development, thereby enhancing Bangladesh’s image in the international arena.
