New York:State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has extended an invitation to Meta Platforms Inc to open an office in Bangladesh.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the invitation was made during a meeting between a high-level Bangladesh delegation and Meta's Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan. This discussion took place on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday. Shama Obaed led the meeting in the absence of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who was unable to attend due to time constraints.
Bangladesh's delegation included Prime Minister's Adviser Rehan Asif Asad, Permanent Representative to the United Nations Irene Khan, and Deputy Permanent Representative AKM Wahiduzzaman. The discussions centered on Bangladesh's large Meta user base and the company's relationship with the country, highlighting opportunities to bolster Bangladesh's digital economy and e-commerce ecosystem.
The meeting also addressed how Meta's platforms and technologies could aid businesses, entrepreneurs, SMEs, and digital commerce in Bangladesh. Additionally, the state minister emphasized the importance of preventing online abuse and digital harassment and mentioned the proposed Cyber Security Act in Bangladesh. The dialogue was characterized as constructive and forward-looking.
