Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan announced today that Bangladesh has entered a new era under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Swapan emphasized that Rahman’s ascension to the prime ministership was backed by the people’s mandate, marking a significant transformation in the nation’s political landscape. Tarique Rahman assumed the role just 57 days after returning to Bangladesh on December 25.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Swapan made these remarks during an Iftar and Doa Mahfil organized by ‘Begum Khaleda Zia Smriti Sangsad’ in memory of the late former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, held at the Dhaka Reporters Unity auditorium. Swapan reflected on how Begum Khaleda Zia, if alive, would have been the happiest to witness her son leading the country. He noted the unfortunate timing of her dream being realized shortly after her passing.

Swapan also highlighted the impactful changes implemented by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, who played a crucial role in steering Bangladesh from famine to food self-sufficiency and fostering a production-oriented economy by privatizing industries and factories. Paying homage to Begum Khaleda Zia, Swapan recalled her transformation from a housewife to a pivotal political figure following the death of her husband, President Ziaur Rahman, and her efforts in restoring democracy and voting rights for the people.

The meeting, presided over by Professor Dr. Sukomal Barua, was conducted by the organization’s member secretary, Saif Mahamud Jewel.
