Dhaka: Bangladesh and Italy have engaged in discussions aimed at enhancing investment, technological collaboration, and business partnerships within Bangladesh's leather sector. A potential visit by a Bangladeshi delegation to Italy was among the key topics discussed during the meeting.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting took place between Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir and Italian Ambassador to Bangladesh Antonio Alessandro at the Ministry of Commerce. Prime Minister's Finance and Planning Adviser Professor Dr Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir was also present. Muktadir highlighted that the proposed visit to Italy would concentrate on attracting new investors, expanding technological cooperation, and strengthening international partnerships within Bangladesh's leather industry.
The Italian ambassador suggested that visits to Milan, Florence, and Rome could showcase Bangladesh's capabilities in the leather sector, focusing on environmentally friendly production facilities and investment opportunities for Italian businesses. He proposed meetings with business organisations in Milan, visits to leather industry areas in Tuscany, Florence, and government-level discussions in Rome to establish effective contacts with potential investors.
The meeting emphasized the importance of international-standard certification, environmental management, and fostering an investment-friendly environment in Bangladesh's leather industry. The Italian ambassador noted that progress in these areas would facilitate the development of mutually beneficial partnerships between companies from both countries.
Waste management at the Savar Leather Industrial Estate was also a topic of discussion. The Bangladeshi side mentioned that large factories would be encouraged to develop their own waste-management facilities, while central facilities would continue to be maintained for smaller factories. Plans are underway to promote the recycling of industrial waste.
The registration process of the Italy Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Bangladesh was another point of discussion. Both sides expressed optimism about further strengthening trade, investment, and industrial cooperation between Bangladesh and Italy.
