Manila: Bangladesh and Chile have initiated discussions on establishing resident diplomatic missions in each other's capitals, aiming to enhance bilateral relations and foster economic and trade cooperation.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the dialogue took place during a bilateral meeting between Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and Chilean Foreign Minister Francisco P©rez Mackenna. The meeting occurred in Manila on the sidelines of the commemorative activities for the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC).
The foreign ministers highlighted the substantial potential for increasing bilateral trade and agreed, in principle, to explore a free trade agreement. Discussions also included the import of critical minerals from Chile and expanding the export of Bangladeshi products such as readymade garments, pharmaceuticals, electrical goods, and leather products to the Chilean market.
Dr Rahman proposed exchanges of business delegations to identify new investment and trade opportunities, aiming to strengthen private-sector engagement. Additionally, the Chilean foreign minister expressed a desire to visit Bangladesh soon, indicating a mutual interest in deepening diplomatic ties and exploring new avenues for trade, investment, and economic cooperation.
