Dhaka:Bangladesh has signed an agreement with Airbus to acquire 10 new aircraft, driven by the nation's aviation needs. The deal, announced by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir, includes four Airbus A350-900 widebody aircraft for long-haul international operations and six A321neo single-aisle aircraft for regional services.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Kobir emphasized that the government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, only signs agreements that serve the interests of the Bangladeshi people. The decision to purchase these aircraft was made to meet national requirements rather than to satisfy external parties.

Kobir stated that the government's cooperation with Airbus is guided by a sound business case based on the country's needs. He assured that agreements are signed only when they are legally sound, reflecting Bangladesh's approach to international partnerships.

The new fleet is expected to join Biman Bangladesh Airlines around 2031 as part of its modernization and long-term growth strategy. The improved aircraft are anticipated to enhance the airline's capacity, strengthen its route network, and improve passenger services.

Kobir congratulated Biman, Airbus, and the European Union on reaching the agreement, noting that the investment would bolster Bangladesh's international connectivity. He also highlighted the strong ties between Bangladesh and European countries, expressing confidence in further commercial cooperation.

The signing ceremony, held at Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden, was attended by key figures including Airbus India and South Asia President Jürgen Westermeier, Biman Board Chairman Rumee A. Hossain, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat, and several European ambassadors.
