Bangladesh achieves self-sufficiency in food: Sadhan

Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder today said

Bangladesh has achieved self-sufficiency in food as the government has taken

various effective initiatives during the three consecutive tenures.

“Once Bangladesh faced severe food deficiency…Now the country has turned

into a food surplus one through taking technology-based initiatives,” he told

a discussion at The Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC), an

official release said.

Sadhan said, “We are not importing rice till now as the country has enough

food stock…. Despite enough rice stock, we are scrutinizing the stock and

rice production to import rice to meet the demand of staple food item.”

The minister said the government has attached priority to invention of

different high yielding varieties of crops to boost food production in the

country.

He urged the scientists to intensify their research for developing high-

yielding varieties of crops as the country’s economy largely depended on

agriculture sector.
