Khagrachhari: A festive atmosphere has spread across the hills as Khagrachhari welcomes ‘Baisabi’, one of the major festivals of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, with a vibrant blend of colours, music and tradition. The three-day programme began on Tuesday morning with a colourful procession organised by the Khagrachhari Hill District Council. Council Chairman Shefalika Tripura formally inaugurated the festival by releasing doves and colourful balloons as symbols of peace on the council premises.

According to United News of Bangladesh, senior government officials, members of law enforcement agencies, and representatives from various public and private organisations attended the event. The procession, which started from the council compound, ended at the town hall premises, turning into a lively gathering. With spontaneous participation from both hill communities and Bengalis, it became a unique expression of communal harmony. Thousands of men, women and children joined the procession, dressed in traditional attire and adorned with colourful ornaments, moving to the rhythm of indigenous musical instruments.

The vibrant display of the cultures and traditions of the Chakma, Marma and Tripura communities was a key attraction. Traditional dances and musical performances created a vivid portrayal of hill culture. The Marma community’s traditional water festival and display performances particularly drew the attention of spectators. For the hill people, Baisabi is more than just a festival-it is a profound expression of their social bonds, culture and heritage. As in previous years, the formal celebration of the New Year festival will begin on April 12 across the three hill districts, following religious and social customs.
