Dhaka: Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain today expressed concerns over the impact of the previous autocratic government on the youth, highlighting the loss of voting rights and suppression of their voices. He made these remarks as the chief guest at the ‘Commonwealth Charter Youth Workshop’ held at a city hotel.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Asif Mahmud emphasized the dark chapter in the country’s history marked by extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and election interference, which affected countless families. He pointed out that many young people have never experienced a free and fair election, with their voices suppressed and their futures taken away. Despite this, he praised the youth for their role in fighting for democracy and justice, which eventually led to freedom from an authoritarian regime.

Asif Mahmud, who also serves as the adviser of the Ministry of LGRD, stated that the current government recognizes that merely changing a regime is insufficient and that national aspirations must be addressed. He mentioned that several commissions have been formed to undertake extensive reform initiatives, with proposals identified for implementation following consultations with various stakeholders, including experts, political parties, and civil society.

He expressed a vision of building a Bangladesh where democracy remains secure, and fundamental rights, freedoms, and dignity are protected. He stressed the importance of active participation from everyone, particularly the younger generation, to achieve this vision.

Regarding the Commonwealth, Asif Mahmud highlighted the significance of the Commonwealth Charter as a fundamental document embodying shared beliefs, commitment to the rule of law, inclusive development, and peaceful coexistence. He emphasized that the Charter should be implemented, protected, and nurtured in everyday life.

Commonwealth Assistant Secretary-General Professor Louis Francesi, speaking as the keynote speaker at the event, addressed the youth, emphasizing the long-term impact of their actions today on their future. He noted that the future of Bangladesh depends on the choices made by the youth, which would bring pride to themselves, their families, and their country. He encouraged collaboration to strengthen democracy, enhance accountable governance, and create a more humane society.
