Kishoreganj:An individual has been arrested by the Special Response Battalion (SRB) in Kishoreganj district in connection with the murder of a college teacher who opposed online gambling activities in Aditmari upazila, Lalmonirhat.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the arrested person, Md Hasan Ali, 20, is the son of Md Zainal Haque from Gandhamarua village under Aditmari police station in Lalmonirhat. A press release revealed that Hasan Ali, along with Rahidul Islam, Masud Ali, and others from the same village, were involved in operating online gambling and casino ventures in the area.
The victim, Ariful Islam, a 35-year-old college teacher, had been actively discouraging these gambling activities and raising awareness about their negative impacts. This led to an attack on him by the aforementioned individuals using iron rods and sharp weapons on August 1, 2026, while he was on his way home from college. Ariful Islam succumbed to his injuries on August 21, 2026, at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.
Following the incident, a murder case was filed by the victim's father at the Aditmari police station on August 2, 2026. Acting on a tip-off, a joint operation by SRB-13 (Rangpur) and SRB-14 (Kishoreganj) led to the arrest of Md Hasan Ali in the Harishchandrapatti Pumdi area under Hossainpur police station, Kishoreganj, at 950 pm on Thursday. Hasan Ali has been transferred to Aditmari police station for further legal proceedings.
