Sylhet: Minister of Labour and Employment and Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Ariful Haque Chowdhury has issued a stern warning against individuals contributing to the declining law and order in Sylhet. He emphasized that the government's zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism and extortion will be strictly enforced, and such activities will not be tolerated.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister made these remarks while speaking to journalists after attending the Holi festival at Manipuri Rajbari in Mirzajangal. Ariful Haque reiterated the commitment to ensuring a safe environment in Sylhet and vowed that those responsible for criminal activities would face consequences. He directed the administration to apprehend those involved in criminal acts, including mugging.
During the event, Abdul Kayum Chowdhury, the Administrator of Sylhet City Corporation, supported the minister's stance by stressing the importance of a peaceful Sylhet. He mentioned that the administration has been tasked with taking action against offenders. Furthermore, he pointed out that efforts will be made to determine if there are deliberate attempts to worsen the law and order situation in the city.
The function was presided over by Digen Singha, President of the Academy for Manipuri Culture and Arts, with Aniruddha Das, Assistant High Commissioner of India in Sylhet, attending as a guest. Other notable attendees included Hindu Religious Welfare Trust Trustee Sudip Ranjan Sen Bappu, Elangbam Jayanta Singha from the Manipur State Kala Akademi, India; Prashanta Kumar Singha, President of the Sylhet Debaloy Rathayatra Celebration Committee, Professor Sharadindu Bhattacharya from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, and Rajesh Bhatia, Second Secretary of the Indian Assistant High Commission in Sylhet.
