Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today emphasized the need for a united front to resist forces opposing women’s rights in the country. Speaking at an award distribution ceremony at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in observance of International Women’s Day, he highlighted the importance of collective action against anti-women forces.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Prof Yunus stressed the urgency of societal change, urging the public to support women to combat violence and discrimination. He remarked on the persistent issue of undermining women in society and called for a shift in mindset to ensure a future free from gender bias.

Prof Yunus expressed deep concern over recent reports of attacks on women, stating that such incidents starkly contrast with the vision of a ‘New Bangladesh’. Highlighting the significant role of women in the nation’s progress, he urged vigilance against forces attempting to create disorder, particularly those with financial backing from fallen dictatorial regimes.

The chief adviser outlined the interim government’s initiatives aimed at women’s welfare, including the development of a hotline for victims of violence and plans to update existing legal frameworks like the Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Act, 2010, and the forthcoming Sexual Harassment Prevention and Protection Act, 2025. He also mentioned the establishment of a reform commission on women’s affairs to provide strategic recommendations.

Prof Yunus celebrated the impressive participation of women in sports during the ‘Youth Festival 2025’, noting the event’s success in fostering youth empowerment and community support for gender equality. He acknowledged the historic contributions of women during significant national movements, including the Liberation War and the July Uprising, urging society to remember and honor these sacrifices.

The interim government, Prof Yunus stated, is committed to empowering women economically through initiatives like microcredit programs, financial support for mothers, and training opportunities. He called on men to collaborate enthusiastically in this endeavor, emphasizing the necessity of women’s rights for the realization of a new Bangladesh.

Concluding his remarks, Prof Yunus bestowed the “Indomitable Women’s Award-2025” to five exceptional women and the Bangladesh Women’s Cricket Team for their outstanding achievements, reinforcing the need for recognition and support of women’s contributions across various fields.
