Dhaka: Amar Ekushey Book Fair will begin on February 20 this year although it is a tradition to commence the fair on the very first of the language month. Like every year, Bangla Academy will arrange the month-long book fair remembering the language heroes, Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2026 Managing Committee Member Secretary Dr Md Selim Reza told at a press conference at Bangla Academy here today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Md Selim Reza mentioned in a written statement that the month-long book fair is an essential part of Bangalee cultural heritage. However, due to certain realities, it was not feasible to start the book fair on February 1 as in previous years. This year’s book fair will begin on February 20. Taking the demands of publishers into consideration, the stall rent has been reduced by 25 percent this year. Reza added that all arrangements related to the book fair have already been completed.
Suhrawardy Udyan has been allocated by the government for the fair, with stall construction work currently underway. The schedules for discussions and cultural programs have been finalized. Regarding the allocation of stalls, Reza noted that 53 new entities applied for stall booking this year in addition to the 527 institutions from last year. Due to space limitations, stalls were allocated to 527 existing entities, while 24 new ones were granted bookings.
Reza addressed the request from some publishers to arrange this year’s book fair after Eid-ul-Fitr, stating that the request came when the work was already 60 percent completed. Moreover, holding the book fair in April is not feasible due to hot weather, dust pollution, and the risk of rainfall, nor’westers, and twisters. Despite the challenges of holding the fair during Ramadan, publishers have agreed to participate.
Bangla Academy Director General Professor Mohammad Azam responded to a question by stating that arrangements have been made for Taraweeh prayers and food stalls for iftar since the fair will be held throughout the holy month of Ramadan. Additionally, there will be adequate water supply at the venue, with all measures taken in consultation with publisher representatives.
