Dhaka: The Algerian Embassy in Dhaka marked the 70th anniversary of the “Outbreak of the Glorious Revolution of National Liberation of Algeria” on Friday evening with a reception that brought together dignitaries, diplomats, and public figures from various sectors. The event, held at a hotel in the city, commemorated the historic date of November 1, 1954, when the revolution began, leading to Algeria’s independence from French colonial rule.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event’s chief guest, Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Adviser Sharmeen S. Murshid, highlighted the strong ties between Bangladesh and Algeria, noting Algeria’s early recognition of Bangladesh’s independence in 1971 as the first Arab nation to do so. She emphasized the ongoing strengthening of bilateral ties and encouraged both nations to explore new opportunities for collaboration. Murshid also underscored the importance of advancing pending agreements and expressed hope for expanded cooperation in key sectors.
Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr. Abdelouahab Saidani, in his address, reflected on the significance of the Algerian Revolution. He stated that the historic date symbolizes not only Algeria’s liberation but also inspired global movements for self-determination and independence, praising the Algerian Revolution as a catalyst for worldwide decolonization. Ambassador Saidani also mentioned Bangladesh’s participation in the 1973 Non-Aligned Movement Summit in Algiers and Algeria’s support for Bangladesh’s membership in the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in 1974.
The Ambassador further noted that relations between Algeria and Bangladesh continue to develop, thanks to the commitment of both countries’ leaders to enhance consultations and exchanges across various sectors. He highlighted the recent approval by Algeria of four key draft agreements in agriculture and water resources, part of a broader set of 20 potential agreements, as evidence of the strengthening bilateral relations.
Ambassador Saidani reaffirmed Algeria’s support for Bangladesh in its pursuit of peace and prosperity.
The event was also attended by Shipping, Textiles, and Jute Adviser Brig. Gen. (Retd.) Dr. M. Sakhawat Hossain and Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter, among others, reflecting the importance of the occasion to both nations. Political leaders, journalists, and diplomats stationed in Dhaka also attended, underscoring the significance of the Algerian Revolution in fostering a legacy of international solidarity and cooperation.
