Dhaka: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul today urged the leaders and activists of the Awami League (AL) to question Sheikh Hasina on her decision to abandon them and leave the country. In a media briefing held at the Secretariat to discuss the first 100 days of the current interim government, Dr Nazrul highlighted the issue, stating that Hasina had arranged for her relatives to go abroad just days before her own departure.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Nazrul also addressed the ongoing student demonstrations at Government Titumir College, expressing concern over the public disruptions caused by what he termed as “irrational movements.” He warned that while the government is monitoring the situation, it is prepared to take stringent measures if the protests intensify, though he assured that the current administration intends to avoid the oppressive tactics previously employed by the Awami League.
When questioned about the timing of the next general election, Dr Nazr
ul indicated that it would take place promptly following the implementation of necessary reforms. He emphasized the importance of avoiding previous election malpractices and stressed that the interim government’s primary interest is in ensuring a fair electoral process, rather than being involved in any fraudulent elections.
Dr Nazrul also mentioned that many members of the interim government are eager to return to their prior professions soon. He noted that almost all criminal cases filed by the former government to suppress public dissent have been dropped, marking a significant shift in the administration’s approach.
Additionally, he highlighted the ongoing efforts to support various reform commissions, including those focused on constitutional, electoral, and judicial improvements. He expressed optimism about the Judiciary Reform Commission’s potential to propose substantial changes, referencing a recent meeting with the commission on November 12.
Furthermore, Dr Nazrul stated that the Law Ministry has
been instrumental in supporting the ratification of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance. The ministry has also facilitated the creation of an inquiry commission to investigate disappearances during the previous Awami League administration, aiming to provide recommendations for legal actions against those responsible for such acts.
