Khulna: Police today arrested local Awami League (AL) leader Liaquat Ali from Fulbarigate area of Khulna city. Liaquat Ali, vice president of the Khulna City Unit Awami League and former president of Khan Jahan Ali Thana Unit, was detained by locals around 12:30 pm near Fulbarigate Bazaar intersection.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, eyewitnesses and police reported that angry local residents detained and assaulted Liaquat Ali before handing him over to law enforcers. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khan Jahan Ali Police Station Kabir Hossain confirmed the arrest, stating that Liaquat Ali was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) and is currently receiving treatment in the hospital’s prison cell.
Police have indicated that multiple cases had been filed against Liaquat Ali at Digholia, Daulatpur, Khan Jahan Ali, and Savar police stations after August 5, 2024. He was previously arrested on May 13 while seeking bail, a day after the Awami League’s political activities were banned, but was released on bail shortly before Eid.
Local sources claim that Liaquat Ali unlawfully held the presidency of the Fulbarigate Market Traders’ Association during the AL’s tenure, ignoring repeated calls for fresh elections from both regular traders and party supporters. OC Kabir Hossain mentioned, “He had been in hiding for a long time. We were informed by local residents around 1:00 pm and recovered him from the spot. He will be shown arrested following his treatment.”
