Cox's Bazar:Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia has confirmed plans to operate direct flights between Cox's Bazar and Penang, marking a significant step in Bangladesh's bid to internationalize its premier beach destination.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat announced that AirAsia would provide direct flight services to Cox's Bazar, connecting the tourist city with Penang in Malaysia. This development coincides with the upcoming formal inauguration of Cox's Bazar International Airport, aimed at attracting foreign airlines and establishing direct international connectivity.

The government is working on several international routes to transform Cox's Bazar into a regional tourism and aviation hub. Plans are underway to launch direct flights on the Cox's Bazar-Kathmandu route, as well as establish connections with Kunming in China's Yunnan province and potentially Middle Eastern countries.

AirAsia's commitment signifies progress in Cox's Bazar's international connectivity efforts, supported by government investments in airport infrastructure and international airline participation. Though the minister did not specify the commencement date for AirAsia's operations or flight frequency, these developments are part of a broader strategy to position Cox's Bazar as an international tourism gateway.

The new passenger terminal at Cox's Bazar airport has recently begun domestic operations. Managed by the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), the terminal will initially handle domestic passengers, with plans to adopt a hybrid arrangement for international operations. The expansion, including a new 17,956-square-metre terminal, is expected to increase the airport's annual passenger capacity significantly.

The government anticipates that direct connectivity with Malaysia, Nepal, China, and potentially the Middle East will attract foreign tourists and boost investment in the local tourism sector. The extended runway at Cox's Bazar, now the longest in Bangladesh, is designed to accommodate wide-body aircraft for international operations, supporting the airport's development as an international aviation gateway.
