Dhaka:Authorities are set to implement AI-powered camera surveillance on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway to curb road accidents and enhance traffic discipline. The advanced system aims to detect traffic violations such as speeding and dangerous overtaking, facilitating automatic legal actions against offenders.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, between June 25, 2022, and October 25, 2026, the expressway experienced approximately 589 road accidents, resulting in 152 fatalities and 950 injuries. The Munshiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence identified reckless driving and traffic law violations as primary accident causes.
The 55-kilometre expressway is a crucial link connecting Dhaka to 21 southern districts. Despite its significance, the road has faced numerous safety challenges. Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam highlighted the initiative to introduce AI camera monitoring on national highways, which will later extend to district and regional highways for continuous surveillance.
Officials, including Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman of the Highway Police, emphasize that reckless speeding is a major cause of accidents. The planned AI camera system will monitor such violations, triggering automated legal proceedings to deter dangerous driving behaviors.
Md Mominul Islam from the Roads and Highways Department reported that speed-limit signs and CCTV cameras are already in place along the expressway. However, he noted that reckless speeding, dangerous overtaking, and other factors continue to contribute to road accidents. The introduction of AI surveillance is expected to bolster traffic law enforcement and improve road safety on the expressway.
