Faridpur: Agriculture and Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammed Aminur Rashid on Saturday assured that the country has adequate fertiliser supplies and issued a stern warning against the creation of artificial shortages or overpricing tactics targeting farmers.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the minister addressed these concerns during a meeting with government officials at the deputy commissioner's office in Faridpur. Presided over by Faridpur Deputy Commissioner Mazharul Islam, the meeting highlighted the government's proactive stance on ensuring fertiliser accessibility and affordability for farmers.
The minister disclosed that the nation imports 1.5 million tonnes more fertiliser than its actual demand, effectively eliminating the possibility of a genuine shortage. He expressed concern over reports that some fertiliser retailers are falsely claiming a lack of supply while hoarding stocks to sell at inflated prices.
Emphasizing the government's commitment to supporting farmers, Minister Rashid remarked, "The government believes that the country will progress if farmers prosper." He also highlighted that while soil quality has declined in various regions, Faridpur's soil remains among the most fertile in the country, presenting significant agricultural development opportunities.
Furthermore, the minister revealed plans to cease imports of jute and onion seeds, aiming to boost local production. He stated, "Our main target is to ensure that we do not have to import any agricultural products in the future."
Minister Rashid urged fertiliser dealers to act responsibly, ensuring timely and fairly-priced deliveries to farmers. The meeting was attended by prominent figures, including Director General of the Department of Agricultural Extension Mohammad Abdur Rahim, Additional Superintendent of Police Fatema Islam, Additional Deputy Commissioner Sohrab Hossain, and Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension agriculturist Shahduzzaman.
