Dhaka: Attorney General and Chairman of the Bangladesh Bar Council Md Asaduzzaman commended the significant contribution of lawyers in removing fascism from Bangladesh. ‘Bangladesh has turned her face from fascism… And the role of our lawyers in the struggle to oust fascism was extraordinary,’ he declared.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Attorney General expressed these remarks during an extended meeting of the Bangladesh Bar Council held at the Multipurpose Hall Room of the bar council. He highlighted that, during the fascist era, lawyers provided free services continuously to safeguard political leaders and human rights activists.
Md Asaduzzaman further pointed out the challenges faced by lawyers, stating, ‘Day after day the workers of the party office dominated the lawyers. We are trying to change the situation by forging unity among the lawyers.’ He emphasized that after assuming leadership of the Bar Council through the July Revolution, the primary objective was to enhance the legal process and advance their agenda, starting with regular examinations to restore the bar council’s prestige.
The Bar Council, he assured, would persist in its efforts to ensure that lawyers, irrespective of political affiliations, can achieve their professional zenith. He urged action against corruption and crimes, even if such acts are perpetrated by members of their own community.
Furthermore, the Bar Council chairman called for increased financial allocation for the judiciary and the benevolent fund of lawyers. He observed that the judiciary annually receives only Taka 500 crore from the revenue sector, whereas the allocation should be a minimum of Taka 3000 crore.
The meeting was attended by Bar Council Vice-Chairman Senior Advocate Zainul Abedin, Secretary Mohammad Kamal Hossain Sikder, Bar Council Executive Committee Chairman Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal, and Bar Council members, along with the presidents and general secretaries of 83 district bar associations and other bar council officials.
