Dhaka: Religious Affairs Adviser Dr. AFM Khalid Hossain has extended his greetings to the Buddhist community on the occasion of the Kathin Chibor Dana, a significant religious festival involving the yellow robe offering ceremony.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Khalid highlighted the historical presence of Buddhism in Bangladesh, referring to Gautam Buddha’s teachings more than 2,500 years ago. He mentioned the writings of Hiuen Tsang, a 7th-century Chinese traveler and Buddhist monk, who documented Buddha’s visit to Bangla to spread Buddhism. Dr. Khalid further emphasized Bangladesh’s sacred connection to Buddhism, noting that in the 7th century, over 150,000 Buddhist monks resided in monasteries across regions such as Bihar, Karnasubarna, Tamralipta, Pundravardhana, and Samatata.

Dr. Khalid pointed out the historical significance of monasteries like Nalanda Vihara in Bihar, Sompur Mahavihara in Paharpur, Shalvon in Mainamati, and Vasu Vihara in Mahasthangar as evidence of Buddhism’s past prominence. He explained that the ultimate aim for Buddhist followers is to achieve Nirvana, guided by the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. Buddhist monks, he explained, abandon worldly life in pursuit of spiritual enlightenment and meditation.

He detailed the Kathin Chibor Dan ceremony, where devotees present new robes and essentials to the monastic community, focusing on a robe crafted in a single day. This festival, he noted, promotes spiritual merit, unity, and harmony among Buddhists. Monks, in turn, share the Dharma for the well-being and peace of many.

Dr. Khalid highlighted the importance of household Buddhists providing alms, robes, shelter, and medical supplies to ordained monks. He cited Buddhist scriptures, stating that the donation of Kathin Chibor is considered the highest form of charity, celebrated after a three-month monastic seclusion during Prabarona Purnima.

Dr. Khalid expressed support for the Buddhist Religious Welfare Trust’s initiative to organize a large-scale Kathin Chibor Dan event, congratulating the officials and participants. He expressed hope that the event would enhance religious consciousness and unity within the Buddhist community, contributing to the nation’s progress.

He concluded by wishing success for the national Kathin Chibor Dan ritual, inviting participation from Buddhist religious leaders and devotees.
