Dhaka: The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) today launched three separate enforcement drives and discovered significant irregularities in the construction of a bridge, a school building, and the provision of healthcare services.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the ACC teams conducted on-site inspections, verified related deeds and documents, and found evidence of irregularities during their preliminary investigation. One enforcement team visited the office of the Executive Engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) in Dhaka, focusing on alleged corruption in the construction of a 270-meter bridge over the Ichamati River in Nababganj upazila. The team discovered that while eight spans were completed, the construction of the arch span remained unfinished. Despite this, LGED records showed 95% of the work as completed, with full payment of approximately Taka 50,84,29,077 made to the contractor.
In a separate operation, another ACC team inspected a five-story primary school building construction site in Gabtoli, Dhaka. They found only two floors constructed, yet payments for four floors had been made. The team collected documents from the site and plans to gather additional records from the relevant office before submitting a final report to ACC headquarters.
Additionally, the Noakhali District Integrated Office team, posing as patients, investigated the Sonaimuri Upazila Health Complex. They discovered insufficient medicine distribution to poor patients despite adequate stock. Furthermore, the hospital lacked a stock registrar, and patients received only half of their allocated cooked meat.
