Dhaka: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has initiated an investigation targeting former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's defense advisor, General Tarique Ahmed Siddique, along with his family members and close associates. The individuals under scrutiny include his wife, Shaheen Siddique, daughter Bushra Siddique, niece Tulip Siddique, and another family member, Azmina Siddique Ruponti. This move is part of a broader effort to address allegations of corruption, embezzlement, and abuse of power.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, ACC Director General Akhtar Hossain announced the decision to proceed with the investigation, citing preliminary findings that suggest potential involvement in corruption, abuse of power, embezzlement of government land, money laundering, and the accumulation of illegal wealth both domestically and internationally. The decision to move forward with the investigation was made after an initial inquiry into the allegations against these individuals.
Further allegations have surfaced regarding Saima Wazed Putul, who is accused of securing her position as the regional director of the World Health Organization (WHO) through illicit means. It is claimed that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina may have leveraged her influence inappropriately to facilitate her daughter's appointment to the position, despite a purported lack of qualifications.
In addition to these individuals, the ACC has also resolved to investigate allegations against former Prime Minister's Principal Secretary, Tofazzal Hossain Mia. He is accused of amassing illegal wealth amounting to crores of taka through bribery, corruption, abuse of power, and money laundering. The ACC's actions are part of a concerted effort to uncover and address corruption within the ranks of government officials and their families.
