Dhaka: BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas today called upon the interim government to announce an election roadmap as soon as possible. “Announce the roadmap as soon as possible for the next election,” he stated at a discussion organized to mark the 21st death anniversary of valiant freedom fighter Mesbah Uddin Ahmed Sabu. The event was organized by Muktijuddho Projonmo and Projonmo Academy at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) in Segunbagicha.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the senior BNP leader emphasized that the government had assumed office three months ago, yet cases against BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and many party leaders and activists have not been withdrawn. He mentioned that it is within the government’s power to drop all cases against BNP leaders and activists, as well as opposition leaders and activists, filed since 2007 through a government ordinance, but this has not yet occurred.

Another Standing Committee Member, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, expressed uncertainty about the
government’s intentions, questioning whether it would remain in power for an extended period or step down after completing its duties. He pointed out that the current government emerged from the student-people movement and the sacrifices made during that time. Roy highlighted the expectation of the citizens for the government to conduct a free and fair election promptly after implementing necessary reforms. He suggested that if the government fulfills its responsibilities, it would be remembered positively in history.

The discussion also featured speeches from BNP Joint Secretary General Abdus Salam Azad, central member Abu Naser Mohammad Rahamatullah, NPP Secretary General Mostafizur Rahman Mostofa, Hosne Ara Begum Rina, wife of the late Mesbah Uddin Ahmed Sabu, former general secretary SM Mizanur Rahman, and UK BNP information secretary Mojibur Rahman. Syed Mozammel Hossain read the keynote paper at the event, chaired by Projonmo Academy President Kalam Fayezee, with Muktojuddho Projonmo Senior Vice-Presid
ent Md Zohirul Islam Kolim serving as moderator.
