Sylhet:Bangladesh Bank Governor Mostaqur Rahman FCMA has urged commercial banks to expedite the distribution of a Tk 60,000 crore special financing package to genuine entrepreneurs without unnecessary delays or complications.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the governor emphasized the importance of this package during a meeting at Bangladesh Bank's Sylhet office, highlighting its role in creating employment, reviving closed industrial units, and stimulating economic activity.
The financing package is designed to alleviate the high borrowing costs faced by businesses, with loans offered at special interest rates between 4 to 8 percent, much lower than the prevailing rates of 12 to 14 percent. Of the total package, Tk 19,000 crore will be sourced from Bangladesh Bank's own funds, while Tk 41,000 crore will come from commercial banks' surplus liquidity.
Key allocations include Tk 20,000 crore for restructuring closed industries and Tk 10,000 crore for supporting agriculture and the rural economy. An additional Tk 1,000 crore is designated to assist unemployed youths in becoming entrepreneurs through the new 'Uddyog' project.
The meeting, chaired by Khaled Ahmed, Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank's Sylhet Office, was attended by representatives from various sectors including commercial banks and the Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Additionally, Salahuddin Tapadar from the Bangladesh Bank's head office presented details of the financing package.
