Japan’s 2027 Asian Cup Hopes Dashed by Postponement

Tokyo:Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu announced his acceptance of the "reality" following the postponement of the 2027 Asian Cup, which has likely deprived him of his final opportunity to secure a title before stepping down.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Asian Football Confederation decided to delay the tournament in Saudi Arabia from January to December due to "exceptional circumstances" in the region, including Houthi attacks on the host country. This shift has impacted Moriyasu's plans, as he was expected to lead Japan in the tournament early next year before being succeeded by current Under-23 coach Go Oiwa. The change might result in Moriyasu leaving his position at the end of this year.

Japan Football Association technical director Masakuni Yamamoto has not provided clarification on the coaching transition as Moriyasu announced his squad for upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Paraguay in Singapore. Moriyasu emphasized the importance of developing Japan's football over his personal coaching timeline. He expressed that while he would have aimed to win the Asian Cup, the potential rescheduling of the games could benefit the new management in preparing for the next World Cup.

Yamamoto mentioned that the timing of Moriyasu's replacement will be determined by the JFA. Japan is also set to play an Asian Cup warm-up match in Osaka on December 30, though it remains unconfirmed if this will proceed as planned. Moriyasu stated that the postponement has not influenced his squad choices for the friendlies, noting that Japan aims to improve its performance against South American teams to enhance their World Cup prospects.
