Sylhet:Bangladesh is set to face West Indies in the second and final Test match at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Thursday, aiming to avoid a series whitewash. The match will commence at 930 am, with the hosts eager to recover from an eight-wicket defeat in the first Test in Dhaka, which impacted their World Test Championship aspirations.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Bangladesh's reliance on spin in Dhaka backfired as West Indies' spinners outperformed them. This has prompted the team to consider a change in strategy for the Sylhet Test, potentially shifting from a spin-heavy approach to utilizing a more balanced surface that supports fast bowlers initially before favoring spinners later in the match.
Bangladesh has a mixed record at the Sylhet venue, having won and lost three Tests each. Despite defeats to Zimbabwe, they have achieved victories over Pakistan and Ireland in their most recent Tests there. The team might introduce either Taskin Ahmed or local favorite Ebadot Hossain Chowdhury into the playing XI to replace a spinner, while veteran Mushfiqur Rahim is expected to return after missing the first Test due to injury.
Amite Hasan, who impressed in the National Cricket League with a double century and a 94-run performance, could also be included in the lineup. Having recently played at the Sylhet venue, he described the pitch as sporting and noted remaining grass, which could benefit fast bowlers.
Historically, Bangladesh has won two out of 11 Test series against West Indies, with the latter claiming eight and one ending in a draw. In total, Bangladesh has won five of the 23 Tests between the two sides, losing 16 and drawing two. West Indies, having shown signs of improvement this year, are looking to complete a series sweep to conclude their World Test Championship cycle on a high note.
West Indies batting coach Floyd Reifer emphasized the importance of consistency and carrying forward the momentum from their victory in Dhaka to ensure a successful series outcome.
