New Delhi:India has expressed its commitment to fostering a positive and constructive relationship with Bangladesh amidst ongoing developments in the neighboring country. The Indian government has reiterated its invitation to Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to visit India for furthering bilateral ties.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Indian External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India is closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh. Discussions are ongoing to renew the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, with an invitation already extended to Bangladesh's Prime Minister for a potential visit to India in the coming months.

Bangladesh's Acting Foreign Minister, Humaiun Kobir, recently emphasized the importance of a bilateral visit by the Prime Minister to India. He noted that maintaining strong relations requires direct engagement, and any such visit would be framed within a bilateral context.

The Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, which expires on December 12 this year, is a focal point of discussions. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam highlighted Bangladesh's efforts to negotiate a renewed treaty that secures its legitimate water rights. A high-level committee has been formed to ensure Bangladesh's interests are protected in discussions with India.

India's Ministry of External Affairs has indicated that any matters related to shared rivers will be addressed through the Joint Rivers Commission. Technical-level meetings on the Ganges treaty have been ongoing, reflecting the critical importance of transboundary water issues for both countries.

Bangladesh's Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee has called for a revised agreement that includes a guarantee clause, similar to the one in the 1977 agreement, ensuring Bangladesh's fair share of the Ganges water during the dry season.

As Bangladesh seeks to address its trade deficit with India, ongoing dialogue remains a key strategy for resolving bilateral issues. The commitment to communication and negotiation reflects the broader goal of enhancing cooperation between the two nations.
