Dhaka:Prime Minister's Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman has raised concerns that funds allegedly looted by the banned political party Awami League might be financing violence and sabotage during the ongoing workers' movement.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Rahman stated that those involved in violent activities are not associated with ordinary workers, as the government had already formed a wage board ahead of schedule to address the rising cost of living and inflation affecting garment workers.
Dr. Rahman made these remarks during a press briefing at the conference room of the Press Information Department (PID) at the Secretariat. He emphasized that the government had formed the wage board out of respect for legitimate worker demands, suggesting there should be no further justification for continued protests or demands.
Citing intelligence information, Dr. Rahman claimed that a fascist network or banned party is spending money looted during its previous tenure to instigate sabotage. He assured that the government and administration are prepared to firmly resist these attempts.
Addressing rumors about Sheikh Hasina's return, Dr. Rahman clarified that the government does not believe violence is being orchestrated to facilitate her return in December. However, he noted that the government would not obstruct her return if she follows the legal process.
Dr. Rahman also commented on the police force's current approach, stating it has moved away from the culture of indiscriminate or excessive use of force that marked the previous regime, though he acknowledged that police actions must adhere to legal guidelines.
Regarding the rising prices of fuel and cooking gas, Dr. Rahman attributed the increases to significant rises in international fuel prices and LNG import costs. He noted that the government is providing record subsidies to the power and energy sectors, though it faces economic pressures and declining subsidy capacity.
He emphasized that the government's measures are designed with the long-term welfare of the people and the country's economic capacity in mind. Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Md. Shah Alam and Principal Information Officer Syed Abdal Ahmed were present at the briefing.
