Dhaka:Navy swimmer Samiul Islam Rafi has once again demonstrated his dominance in the pool, emerging as the standout performer at the just concluded 35th National Swimming, Diving and Water Polo Competition at the National Swimming Complex in Mirpur.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rafi clinched the men's best swimmer title for the fourth consecutive edition, further cementing his position as one of the country's leading swimmers.
The 22-year-old swimmer from Rajbari district believes his performance has improved significantly after spending the last two years training in Thailand. He is now aiming to qualify directly for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics by further enhancing his performance. Rafi expressed his dream to compete in Los Angeles, stating that he is working hard and preparing different plans to achieve this goal.
Rafi described his participation in the 2024 Paris Olympics as the biggest achievement of his career so far. He noted that competing at the Olympics is a dream for every athlete and representing his country on such a significant stage was a great achievement. Additionally, Rafi set a South Asian record in the 50-metre backstroke at the South Asian Games in Thailand, which he considers another special accomplishment.
At the 35th National Swimming Competition, Rafi achieved seven gold medals, setting new national records in four events, including the 50-metre backstroke, 50-metre butterfly, 100-metre freestyle, and 400-metre mixed medley relay. Rafi attributed his improved performance to his training in Thailand, which also led him to training opportunities in France alongside world-class swimmers.
Rafi's journey in competitive swimming began in 2016 when he participated in the 'Search for the Best Swimmer' programme and joined the Bangladesh Swimming Federation's camp. He learned to swim at the age of three in his village and was inspired to join the Bangladesh Navy, a prominent institution for swimmers.
Rafi encouraged young people to take up swimming, urging parents to support their children's interest in the sport from an early age. He believes that early encouragement can help produce talented swimmers who will bring glory to the nation.
Rafi is currently preparing for the 18th edition of the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) in Beijing, China, in December, aiming to improve his personal performance and reach the semifinals of the global competition.
