Dhaka:Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar has voiced strong concerns regarding the recent increase in the price of a 12kg liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder by Tk 223. He cautioned that this hike is likely to exacerbate the financial difficulties faced by citizens already burdened by the rising cost of living.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Porwar highlighted that the new price for a 12kg LPG cylinder has reached Tk 2,060. This increase is expected to lead to higher household expenses, particularly affecting low- and middle-income families.

Porwar noted that individuals are already struggling with the escalating prices of essential commodities, and this additional rise in LPG prices, coming within just a month of the previous increase, would further strain their financial resources. He criticized the government's inability to maintain LPG sales at the officially fixed prices, alleging that cylinders have consistently been sold at rates exceeding the government-fixed prices.

The Jamaat leader pointed out that there were allegations of 12kg LPG cylinders being sold for Tk 2,200 to Tk 2,300 even in the capital prior to the latest price hike. He noted the absence of effective market monitoring and accountability. Porwar called on the government to revoke the LPG price hike immediately, enforce sales at the officially fixed rates, and take decisive steps to dismantle syndicates and curb excessive profiteering. He also urged for strengthened regular market monitoring to protect the interests of consumers.
