Dhaka:The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld a High Court order granting bail to former lawmaker Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman, who was involved in a case concerning alleged obstruction of government work and misconduct with officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Md Rezaul Haque passed the order on Monday, rejecting the state's petition challenging the High Court's decision to grant bail. This ruling removes any legal barriers to Akhtaruzzaman's release, as confirmed by his lawyer, Mohammad Shishir Manir.

The High Court had earlier granted bail to Akhtaruzzaman on Sunday. Akhtaruzzaman, who has been expelled from the BNP multiple times, joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in December 2025. His bail petition was previously denied by the Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-5 on October 26.

The case against Akhtaruzzaman originated from an incident on October 1 at the airport, where passengers from a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight arriving from Madinah experienced a shortage of luggage trolleys and delays. Akhtaruzzaman was accused of verbally abusing and threatening the Airport Executive Director, Group Captain SM Ragib Samad, assaulting security supervisor Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin, and behaving aggressively towards a Biman representative. He allegedly threw bottles of Zamzam water from passengers' trolleys during the incident.

The Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Akhtaruzzaman at his residence in the Dhaka Cantonment area on October 2. He was placed on a one-day remand for interrogation and subsequently sent to jail after a court rejected his bail petition on October 4.
