Dhaka:Government officials and employees have begun receiving their salaries under a newly implemented pay structure, marking the first major revision in 11 years. Along with their October salaries, employees also received arrears for the months of July, August, and September.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, many government employees received confirmation of their payments via SMS notifications on their mobile phones after 1000 am. The new pay structure affects nearly all of the country's 1.4 million government employees, 800,000 pensioners, and 600,000 MPO-listed teachers. However, some employees have not yet received their revised salaries due to incomplete pay fixation processes.

The government issued a gazette notification on September 17 announcing the new National Pay Scale, which retains the existing 20 grades of government employees while increasing basic salaries by up to 142 percent. Employees in grades one to 11 saw a 100 percent increase, while those in grades 12 to 20 received increases ranging from 115 to 142 percent.

The new pay structure took effect on July 1, 2026, and its implementation is scheduled in phases. From July 1 to December 31, 2026, officials in grade nine and above will receive 40 percent of the increased basic salary, while those in grades 10 to 20 will receive 50 percent. From January 1 to June 30, 2027, employees will receive 75 percent of the increased basic salary, with full implementation, including annual increments, set for July 1, 2027.

All other allowances will remain at the rates applicable as of June 30, 2026, until December 31, 2027. The revised allowance rates will take effect from January 1, 2028. The previous National Pay Scale was implemented in 2015, where basic salaries increased by 95 percent at the highest grade and 101 percent at the lowest grade.
