Dhaka:The Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) has expressed approval of the government's decision to establish a new wage board for garment workers, emphasizing the importance of fair wages while ensuring the continued operation of factories.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, BKMEA President Mohammad Hatem endorsed the government's move, recognizing the necessity of balancing fair worker compensation with the operational stability of the industry.
Hatem acknowledged the financial strain on garment workers due to the increasing cost of living. He also highlighted the challenges faced by the industry, including a global economic slowdown, energy crisis, rising production costs, and declining export orders.
The new wage board will include representatives from the government, employers, and workers. BKMEA believes that a mutually agreeable wage structure can be achieved through discussions among these parties.
The proposed wage structure aims to sustain workers' living standards while preserving the industry's competitiveness and operational capacity. BKMEA stressed the interdependence of workers and the industry, stating that the country's economic progress hinges on protecting the interests of both.
The statement called for collaboration among all parties to reach an acceptable and sustainable solution, emphasizing the mutual survival of both workers and the industry.
