Dhaka:The government is set to roll out a comprehensive year-long campaign aimed at enhancing family planning and raising public awareness about birth control starting December 1, 2026. The program will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman under the slogan, "Not more than two children, one is better," and will run until November 30, 2027.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the initiative, led by the Directorate General of Family Planning, is a response to the rising fertility rate and declining use of contraceptive methods in the country. The campaign aims to emphasize the significance of family planning services and encourage grassroots participation. Data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics' Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 2025 indicates that the total fertility rate has increased to 2.4, while the contraceptive prevalence rate has dropped from 62.7 percent to 58.2 percent.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Husain announced that the campaign will feature public awareness activities, including slogans disseminated through various cultural and sports activities. Efforts will not be limited to awareness, as the campaign will also ensure the provision of necessary contraceptive supplies and services.
The family planning initiative will include a 22-point strategic action plan targeting maternal and child healthcare services, involving various stakeholders, including women members of parliament, local representatives, religious and social leaders, and digital influencers. The action plan also aims to address issues such as child marriage, unintended pregnancies, and unsafe abortions, with specific activities planned for different population groups and geographic areas.
Despite existing challenges such as a significant shortage of Family Welfare Assistants and depleted stocks of contraceptive commodities in many upazilas, the Directorate General of Family Planning remains optimistic. Director General Dr. Jinnat Rehana indicated that efforts are underway to overcome these challenges and begin distribution of contraceptive supplies by December. The campaign aims to raise awareness and inform the public about the availability and access points for contraceptive commodities.
