Dhaka:The government has established a minimum wage board for the readymade garment (RMG) sector, incorporating representatives from employers, workers, and neutral parties to set the minimum wage for garment workers.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Ministry of Labour and Employment issued two separate notifications regarding this development. ABM Shamsuddin, a director of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), has been appointed as the employers' representative, while Babul Akhter, general secretary of the Bangladesh Garment and Industrial Workers Federation, will represent the workers.

In addition, Dr. Mosleh Uddin Ahmad, a professor from Dhaka University's Department of Public Administration, has been appointed as a neutral member. Asif Ayub, joint secretary-general of the Bangladesh Employers Federation, will serve as another employers' representative, and Anwar Hossain, president of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, will act as a workers' representative.

These appointments align with the Bangladesh Labour Act, 2006 (as amended in 2026). The notifications direct the chairman of the minimum wage board to begin the necessary proceedings, in collaboration with the representatives of employers, workers, and neutral members, to establish the minimum wage for garment workers.
