Sylhet:Police have arrested a man in Jaintiapur upazila in connection with a case filed over an alleged attempt to traffic two women to India by promising them well-paid jobs.
According to United News of Bangladesh, a team from Jaintiapur Model Police Station apprehended Hanif Miah, 35, at around 950 pm on Thursday in the Alubagan area of the upazila. Hanif, the son of the late Sayed Ali of Dibir Haor village, is already facing five other cases related to human trafficking, as stated by Officer-in-Charge Mahbubur Rahman Molla.
The case statement reveals that Sagorika Begum, 39, from Bahirgram in Narail Sadar upazila, arrived in Sylhet on October 8 to visit the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA). During her visit, she met another woman named Nasrin Begum, and they decided to visit Jaflong together. However, they were allegedly taken into a microbus under the pretense of traveling to Jaflong and offered well-paid jobs in India instead.
The women were transported to Shapla Beel in the Dibir Haor area of Nijpat union under Jaintiapur upazila around 1130 pm. The case alleges that Hanif, along with several others, attempted to lure the women with various promises to facilitate their trafficking to India. Fearing for their safety, the women managed to escape and later, Sagorika filed a case with Jaintiapur Model Police Station regarding the incident.
