Dhaka:Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain emphasized the need for increased allocations to the National Institute of Mental Health and Hospital (NIMH) to enhance mental healthcare quality and expand research activities.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister highlighted the importance of research, public awareness, and skilled manpower development in addressing the rise of mental illnesses. He spoke at a discussion at the NIMH in Agargaon, marking World Mental Health Day, with State Minister Dr. MA Muhit attending as a special guest.
Sakhawat announced that the Pabna Mental Hospital would cease to be used as a recreational venue, with measures to be implemented within 24 hours to ensure it provides the necessary environment for patient care and rehabilitation. The minister also mentioned plans to transform the hospital into a suitable healthcare facility.
Regarding doctor training, Sakhawat noted that 500 doctors have recently joined, with ongoing discussions with China, Turkey, and Pakistan for further training. He also mentioned potential initiatives to introduce advanced robotic surgery facilities in Bangladesh.
Dr. Muhit underscored research as a vital investment for tackling the mental health crisis, advocating for substantial funding for national-level research. He proposed expanding mental healthcare to the district level, moving away from a Dhaka-centric model. Plans include introducing secure counselling services at district hospitals through modern technology, allowing at-home consultations with specialists.
Additionally, the state minister called for short-term certificate courses to enhance the skills of non-doctor professionals. The event was chaired by NIMH Director Professor Dr. Saifun Nahar, with other notable attendees including Professor Dr. Mirza Md Ziaul Islam and WHO's Dr. Anthony Eshofonie.
