Yerevan:Bangladesh has urged for the implementation of effective measures to facilitate easier access to financing, technology transfer, and capacity building for developing nations in their efforts to protect biodiversity.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Fahmida Khanam, who heads the Bangladesh delegation and serves as the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, made this call during the high-level segment of the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP-17) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) held in Yerevan, Armenia.
In her statement at the Yerevan Plenary Hall, Dr. Khanam emphasized that Bangladesh, which is home to approximately 14,000 species across its diverse ecosystems, faces significant threats from climate change, habitat loss, and increasing pressure on natural resources. She pointed out that biodiversity loss in coastal areas and the degradation of mangroves and wetlands are escalating social and environmental risks.
Dr. Khanam also noted that the Bangladeshi government is committed to involving all societal sectors in implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. In alignment with this framework, the country has established 23 national targets that encompass 107 activities, which include integrating biodiversity into planning processes, restoring ecosystems, expanding protected areas, and identifying invasive alien species.
