Khulna:Khulna Divisional Commissioner Mohammad Abdullah Harun today emphasized the importance of maintaining footpaths free from encroachments to provide a safe walking environment for pedestrians.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Divisional Commissioner highlighted this concern during a discussion meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner's Office in Khulna on the occasion of "National Road Safety Day." He also stressed the necessity of regular road maintenance, proper training for motorcyclists, and adherence to traffic rules to mitigate road accidents.
Harun pointed out that despite over three decades since the 'NirapadSarak Chai' movement began, road safety remains a significant concern due to various contributing factors, including insufficient sustainable economic development. He warned against creating hazardous conditions on roads in the pursuit of employment opportunities, urging collective efforts to foster safer roads through increased public awareness.
The meeting, chaired by Khulna Deputy Commissioner Hoore Jannat, featured BRTA Divisional Director Mohammad Rafiqul Islam as a key discussant. Khulna Metropolitan Police's Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) Shafiqul Islam also addressed the event as a special guest. Several other local leaders and union presidents contributed to the discussions.
The day's observance included a roadshow in front of the Khulna Collectorate Office, with participation from government officials, educators, students, members of the Bangladesh National Cadet Corps, Rover Scouts, and various community members. Although National Road Safety Day is typically observed on October 22, celebrations in Khulna and other regions were postponed due to the Durga Puja public holiday.
