Dhaka:A Dhaka court has convicted and sentenced former assistant tax commissioner Shyamal Krishna Das to five years of imprisonment in a graft case. He was also fined Taka 10 lakh for amassing illegal wealth, as filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, in default of paying the fine, Shyamal will have to serve an additional year in jail. The court has also ordered the confiscation of Taka 1,36,46,522, which was illegally earned by Shyamal, in favor of the state. The verdict was pronounced by Judge Abdus Salam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-9, and Shyamal was present in court when he was sent back to jail with a conviction warrant.

The ACC filed the case against Shyamal on May 23, 2024, for amassing illegal wealth totaling Taka 1,85,95,792. According to case documents, Shyamal was posted at the Mymensingh Tax Zone of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) before his retirement. On February 8, 2021, he submitted a detailed wealth statement to the ACC, disclosing assets worth Taka 2,73,83,817 and family expenses of Taka 31,13,200, bringing the total assets and expenditure to Taka 3,04,97,017.

Out of this amount, Shyamal’s legitimate income was determined to be Taka 1,19,01,225, leaving Taka 1,85,95,792 without a lawful source. The ACC considered this amount as assets beyond his known sources of income and filed a charge-sheet on April 17, 2025. The court subsequently indicted Shyamal on February 18, 2026. Throughout the case, four witnesses provided testimony on different hearing dates.
