Dhaka:Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir stated that police might resort to crossfire if permitted by the government, should it become necessary to maintain law and order and curb crimes. He made these comments during the inauguration of Community Bank Bangladesh PLC's Islamic banking service, 'Community Islamic', in Chawkbazar.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the IGP emphasized the police's commitment to a zero-tolerance policy toward drug prevention. He highlighted the challenges faced by police officers, noting that they are criticized as either too harsh or too weak, depending on their actions. Fakir also mentioned that police officers involved in criminal activities are subject to internal accountability measures.
He further commented on the involvement of some members of the now-banned Awami League in the drug trade, alongside certain police personnel. Fakir revealed that 27 police members have been jailed recently to address misconduct within the force.
The IGP called for greater empowerment of the police and urged the public to avoid spreading rumors, instead cooperating with law enforcement. He stressed that restoring societal peace requires allowing police to enforce laws effectively.
In his role as chairman of Community Bank, Fakir also addressed the need for ethical practices in Islamic banking, condemning past sector irregularities and advocating for strict adherence to Islamic principles. He urged customers to trust the bank's current management, assuring there would be no repeat of past issues. The event was attended by Community Bank's directors, managing director, and senior officials.
