Dhaka:Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has voiced strong condemnation and concern over comments made by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) regarding the potential use of crossfire to maintain law and order, contingent upon government approval.
According to United News of Bangladesh, TIB has urged the government to seek a formal explanation from the IGP, demand a retraction of his statements along with an unconditional public apology, and hold him administratively accountable. TIB also advocates for the IGP's removal from office until accountability is secured.
TIB described the IGP's remarks as promoting a dangerous precedent by suggesting extrajudicial killings as an acceptable crime control method, thus undermining the rule of law and constitutional values. The organization emphasized that such statements contradict the government's stated opposition to extrajudicial killings, highlighting the need for accountability and the withdrawal of the remarks.
Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, TIB Executive Director, criticized the IGP's stance, questioning whether it represented an attempt to legitimize extrajudicial killings as a substitute for effective law enforcement. He called for adherence to legal processes and professional investigations rather than resorting to crossfire, which he termed as an example of professional failure.
Dr. Iftekharuzzaman further recalled past incidents, such as the Sinha murder case and the Narayanganj seven-murder case, as reminders of the misuse of power in law enforcement. He expressed concern that the IGP's comments could be interpreted as implicit approval for unlawful force, questioning the IGP's suitability for leadership.
TIB emphasized the need for police actions to be lawful, necessary, and proportionate, highlighting international standards that permit the use of firearms only when unavoidable to protect life. The organization also addressed allegations against journalists, stressing that criticisms should be based on evidence rather than sweeping accusations, which could undermine media freedom and accountability.
Overall, TIB urged the government to clarify the inconsistencies between the IGP's remarks and the government's declared position, ensuring that accountability mechanisms are in place to uphold the rule of law.
