Dhaka:Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called for action against Inspector General of Police Ali Hossain Fakir following his controversial remarks about employing crossfire tactics if permitted by the government.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Advocate Ahsanul Mahbub Zubair condemned the remarks, labeling them as contrary to the Constitution and the rule of law. The comments were made by the IGP during his speech as the chief guest at the launch of Community Islamic, an Islamic banking service by Community Bank Bangladesh PLC, in Dhaka's Chawkbazar.

The Jamaat leader emphasized that the police are tasked with maintaining law and order and safeguarding citizens, describing them as public servants rather than rulers. He criticized the police chief's comments as unacceptable, especially in light of the country's worsening law and order conditions, suggesting that such statements could revive a climate of fear.

Zubair alluded to allegations of abuse under the previous government, where extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances were reportedly conducted during law enforcement operations. He urged the government to address the IGP's statement and criticized law enforcement agencies for their inability to manage violence by BNP activists, as well as issues related to extortion and drug activities. He called on police officials to take effective measures to ensure public safety and enhance the security of citizens' lives.
