London:American R&B singer Chris Brown has avoided jail time after being sentenced by a UK court for his involvement in a brawl at a London nightclub in 2023. The court handed Brown an eight-month jail sentence, suspended for a year, meaning he will not be imprisoned unless he commits another offense during this period.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Brown, who appeared in Southwark Crown Court in London wearing a black face mask and cap, had admitted to affray during a July court appearance. Judge Tony Baumgartner emphasized the seriousness of violence in a crowded nightclub, citing the risk to others, while delivering the sentence.
Prosecutors accused Brown and co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu, also a US national, of launching an unprovoked attack in the club. Brown was alleged to have used a glass bottle to strike the victim's head twice. By pleading guilty, Brown avoided a trial on additional charges, including attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon.
The incident occurred at Tape, a private members' club in central London, on February 19, 2023, while Brown was touring the UK. The victim was reportedly struck multiple times with a bottle before being pursued, punched, and kicked.
Brown, known for his mid-2000s hits like "Kiss, Kiss," has a history of legal issues, including a felony conviction for assaulting singer Rihanna in 2009. His rise to fame began with his R&B voice, transitioning to rap, but was marred by several legal troubles over the years.
Co-defendant Akinlolu, 40, also pleaded guilty to affray related to the London incident and received a four-month suspended sentence.
