Dhaka:The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has initiated two legal cases against former Special Branch chief Md. Monirul Islam, his wife Saila Farzana, and their relatives. The allegations pertain to acquiring assets beyond their known sources of income and money laundering activities.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the ACC's investigations revealed that Rejaul Alam Shahin, Monirul's brother-in-law, along with his wife Sanjida Khanum Tumpa, amassed assets worth Taka 38,62,67,585, which do not align with their disclosed sources of income.
The investigation further disclosed that between December 8, 2013, and April 16, 2024, Rejaul Alam Shahin conducted financial transactions totaling Taka 1045,28,30,738 across 40 bank accounts. In the same period, Sanjida Khanum Tumpa executed transactions amounting to Taka 58,62,54,343 through 27 bank accounts.
The ACC found assets valued at Taka 15,97,39,765 registered under Sanjida Khanum Tumpa's name. However, only Taka 67,18,706 could be justified through her legitimate income sources, resulting in an unexplained asset value of Taka 15,30,21,059.
The ACC clarified that the first case has been lodged against Rezaul Alam Shahin, Md. Monirul Islam, and Saila Farzana, while the second involves Sanjida Khanum Tumpa, Md. Monirul Islam, Saila Farzana, and Rezaul Alam Shahin. The charges are based on violations of section 27(1) of the ACC Act, 2004, section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947, sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012, and section 109 of the Penal Code.
