Dhaka:The legendary Dhakai Muslin, renowned for its delicate cotton weave, is poised to re-enter the global market. This development follows the successful restoration of ancient thread-making technology and the unique raw materials required for its production.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the revival of Dhakai Muslin is part of a government initiative supported by extensive genome research and the skilled craftsmanship of women artisans. The traditional fabric, celebrated as a luxury item in ancient Roman, Greek, and Arab empires, is now ready for commercial production.

The revival project began in 2014 when the Bangladesh Handloom Board initiated a research team to restore Muslin. By 2020, Dhakai Muslin had achieved Geographical Indication (GI) status, securing exclusive rights for Bangladesh. The government is currently executing the second phase of the project, valued at Taka 18.5 crore, which includes training over 300 women in the intricate art of Muslin spinning.

International interest in the revived fabric is high, with luxury brands from countries such as the United States, France, and Japan expressing keen interest. A significant order for 500 yards has already been completed. The establishment of the Dhakai Muslin House in Narayanganj is facilitating the transfer of this technology to private sector entrepreneurs.

Efforts are underway to further improve the 'Phuti Karpas' cotton variety and establish contract farming to meet raw material demands. Although the production cost remains high, plans to reduce prices through mass production are in place, aiming to position Dhakai Muslin as a premium luxury fashion item in the global market.
