Dhaka:The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has initiated legal proceedings against the former Vice-Chancellor of Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU), Swadesh Chandra Samanta, and the former Registrar, Santosh Kumar Basu. The duo is accused of causing a financial loss of Taka 8.1 million to the state through irregular recruitment practices at the university.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Md. Aktarul Islam, Deputy Director of the ACC Public Relations Division, confirmed the filing of the case. The ACC records indicate that the accused recruited personnel for positions not sanctioned by the University Grants Commission (UGC), including the hiring of the former VC's son.
The records further outline that Swadesh Chandra Samanta and Santosh Kumar Basu allegedly abused their positions, influencing the selection board to hire for unapproved positions. This involved the drafting and approval of a Regents Board resolution to legitimize these appointments under the guise of directives from the VC.
The financial implications of these actions, as stated in the ACC records, amount to salaries and allowances totaling 80,75,131 Taka, categorized as a loss to the government. The legal action will proceed under section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947, along with sections 409 and 109 of the Penal Code.
