Cumilla:A young entrepreneur from Burichang upazila has embarked on a pioneering venture to boost year-round production of vegetables and fruits by setting up a state-of-the-art greenhouse, with an estimated investment of Taka 60 lakh.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rashed, the son of Abdul Matin from Uttarpara village in Aganagar, Bakshimail union, is spearheading this initiative with the support of the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC). This effort aims to integrate technology-driven farming as an alternative to traditional agricultural practices.

The greenhouse is equipped with multiple fans to control the internal temperature, ensuring a favorable environment for crop cultivation. Additionally, a comprehensive solar power system has been installed to power the fans, maintaining a controlled growing environment throughout the year.

The greenhouse plans to cultivate a diverse array of vegetables and fruits, including water spinach, Malabar spinach, coriander leaves, spinach, yardlong beans, grapes, and watermelons.

Burichang Upazila Agriculture Officer Afrin Akhter noted that this initiative is part of a government agricultural development project aimed at increasing vegetable production through greenhouse technology. She highlighted Rashed's involvement as a significant step towards agricultural modernization, with the potential for successful implementation to meet domestic demand and create export opportunities for agricultural products.

Rashed expressed his primary goal of producing safe, chemical-free vegetables and fruits using modern agricultural technology.

BADC Cumilla Regional Officer Ishaq Majumder mentioned that two greenhouse projects have been allocated to Cumilla district under the government initiative, both located in Burichang upazila—one in Kurpai and the other in Palti Rajapur under Bakshimail union.

Agricultural officials believe that successful implementation of greenhouse technology and solar power could pave the way for climate-resilient farming and modern agricultural production in Burichang and across Cumilla. The initiative is expected to demonstrate the benefits of technology-based farming in diversifying crops, improving production practices, and exploring new market opportunities.
